A Maldives wedding, honestly costed
Overwater villas photograph beautifully and cost less than a marquee in Surrey. The difficult parts are the ones nobody puts in the brochure.
We plan four or five of these a year and the conversation always starts the same way: someone has seen a photograph. The photograph is accurate. What it leaves out is the eleven months of logistics behind it.
The costs that surprise people
The resort package is usually the honest part. What catches couples out is everything around it:
- Legal formalities. A Maldivian ceremony is not a legal marriage for most nationalities. Nearly every couple we work with signs the paperwork at home a week before and treats the island as the ceremony. Plan for that; do not discover it in month nine.
- Guest attrition. Expect a third of your list to decline, and expect it late. Build the seating plan after final flights are booked, not before.
- Transfers. Seaplanes stop flying at dusk and do not fly in weather. A guest arriving on a delayed long-haul may lose a day.
- Shipping. Anything you bring — stationery, favors, a particular dress hanger — clears customs on island time.
What it buys you
Three days rather than eight hours. The value of a destination wedding is not the ceremony, which is the same length anywhere. It is that everyone you love is on one small island with nothing to do but be there, and you get breakfast with all of them.
When we advise against it
If more than a quarter of your guest list would struggle with the cost of attending, a destination wedding quietly becomes a smaller wedding with a guilt problem attached. That is a fine choice made deliberately and a miserable one made by accident.
